Liberated Learning Partners in Europe:
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Overview: Dr Pilar Orero has been working for years on Media Accessibility. In
2005 she organised the International Conference Media for All 1, and was
aware for the first time of the need to have a real-time subtitling
service at university. Since stenotype does not exist for Catalan
language, typing in real time was the only available system to create
real-time subtitles. Since then she has been researching ways to bridge
this problem, and learned of the Liberated Learning Consortium and the
posssibility of developping ASR for minority languages, such as the
other three Official Languages in Spain: Catalan, Galiciand and Euskera.
Dr Orero's current LL related research at Universitat Autònoma de
Barcelona includes:
- Developing a SR engine for Catalan, Galiciand and Euskera.
- Developing an access code of practice, and physical installation, for university lecturing and official activities.
- Developping PG courses on subtitling by SR for online and face-to-face formats.
- Developing different applications of subtitling by SR, as an added value to accessibility: therapeutic subtitles, social integration, etc.
