Liberated Learning Partners in Europe:
University of Bologna, Italy
Overview: The University of Bologna
may be the first University established in the western world.
Its history is one of great thinkers in science and the humanities,
making it an indispensable point of reference in the panorama
of European culture. The institution that we today call the
University began to take shape in Bologna at the end of the
eleventh century, when masters of Grammar, Rhetoric and Logic
began to devote themselves to the law. In the nineteenth century
a committee of historians, led by Giosuè Carducci,
attributed the birth of the University to the year 1088.
The University of Bologna is the first university to test
the Liberated Learning concept and ViaScribe technology in
a neo-Latin context. Liberated Learning activities at the
University of Bologna are mainly carried out by people from
the Direction and Development of the Web Activities (Direzione
e Sviluppo delle Attività Web, DSAW), a university
organization aimed at developing, improving and delivering
useful services to university target users. In the Liberated
Learning context, the DSAW closely collaborates with the Office
for Disabled and Dyslexic Student Services in order to further
understand and support the challenges encountered by people
with disabilities.
The University of Bologna has been involved in special projects
on the crucial topic of accessibility and is very interested
to be involved in every initiative that facilitates the university
information and service delivery to people with disabilities.
The membership to the Liberated Learning Consortium permits
the University of Bologna to encourage students with disabilities
to attend lessons together with their non-disabled classmates.
Some of the core objectives of the Italian testing are:
- to evaluate the Liberated Learning impact on Italian
students and professors
- to evaluate the Liberated Learning impact on foreign
students who attend Italian lessons
- to improve the Liberated Learning testing efficacy on
people with disabilities
- to test the Italian version of ViaScribe in real and
different educational contexts, in order to enrich the knowledge
base with terms related to various subjects, such as classical
studies or scientific topics
- to modify the ViaScribe Interface: translate terms in
Italian, modify voice commands and add new features
