Liberated Learning Partners in Australasia:
Charles Darwin University, Australia
Overview:
Charles Darwin University, a dual sector institution covering vocational and higher education, is one of Australia’s youngest universities, servicing the Northern Territory of Australia, a huge geographical area with a widely dispersed and sparse population with a strong representation of target equity groups including Australia’s greatest proportion of Indigenous Australians.
Charles Darwin University joined the Consortium in the first part of 2007 and is committed to:
- be an active, productive and valued member of the Consortium
- routinely utilise Speech Recognition Technology (SRT) in the teaching of students with a disability and other equity group students including those from non English speaking backgrounds
- incorporate the Liberated Learning (LL) philosophy and Speech Recognition Technology as a component of the University’s broad approach to flexible learning
- undertake research into the use and effectiveness of SRT in enhancing learning across CDU’s diverse stakeholder constituency for the benefit of CDU and other Consortium members
Research projects under consideration are:
- Impact of using SRT in staff development activities on attitudes towards clients with a disability.
- Impact of using SRT in lectures on student retention and success in the University’s common unit program - a mandatory component of all undergraduate degrees aimed at improving academic literacy and knowledge of regional issues
- Application of LL Philosophy and SRT to Vocational and Technical Education
