Liberated Learning Partners in Asia:
Hiroshima University, Japan
Overview:
Nationally renowned for their accessibility leadership and dedication to students with disabilities, Hiroshima University in Japan joined the Liberated Learning Consortium in April 2005, as our first Asian member. Prof. Mariko Fujita-Sano, Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences, is spearheading the initiative at Hiroshima University.
A working group was established for the July 2005 - March 2007 term consisting of Prof. Mariko Fujita-Sano (Chair) and 9 professors of various fields. English ViaScribe and Japanese ViaScribe are tested by a diverse group of professors in such classes as English language classes, Anthropology, Physics, Political Science, and Psychology. The Phase I was a Pilot term from August 2005-March 2006 where testing was evaluated and feedback provided by students and faculty. Recommendations from the Pilot Phase are incorporated into Phase II (full implementation) for April 2006-March 2007.
Hiroshima University will have a key role in the development and testing of Japanese ViaScribe with IBM Japan through an iterative software development cycle, and the implementation of the LL concept as universal designed teaching / learning tool. The transcription and alignment of digitized lecture archive is of interest to the Hiroshima team, as well as international collaboration with Liberated Learning members for sustainability and growth.
