Liberated Learning Partners in North America:
Purdue University, USA
Overview:
The Adaptive Learning Programs Lab (ALPs) has been the centre for Liberated
Learning activities at Purdue University, one of the largest
institutions to be involved in Liberated Learning classroom
testing. Purdue’s research and testing through the 2004-05
and 2005-06 school years focused on the use of pre-recorded
audio input to create ViaScribe™ transcriptions.
Purdue lecture theatres benefit from a unique technology
known as “BoilerCast”. Lecture materials are recorded
via the BoilerCast network and published on the BoilerCast
Website. ViaScribe™ speech recognition technology was
an obvious complement to this pre-existing system. Lecture
materials were recorded using the pre-existing BoilerCast
network and then transcribed into the ViaScribe format and
posted for distribution. The synchronized audio and text files
were evaluated for audio input, transcription methodology
and error rate parameters.
Purdue has identified several directions for future research
such as real-time output on a wireless network to provide
lecture support for laptops, PDAs or other portable devices.
