| Part 5 and 6: Hosted/Distributed Transcription Systems
- Alexander Faisman, IBM Research
- James Hamilton, Macquarie University.
Alex Faisman, IBM Research describes the IBM Hosted Transcription Service: a web based prototype that allows users to submit an audio/video URL or upload a media file directly for transcription. The service first converts raw data into a suitable format for SR processing and then produces a SR generated text transcript, as well as various other multimedia formats. Alex also created a set of core files, development tools, and examples that Consortium members are using to create SR based transcription and captioning systems. James Hamilton from Macquarie University describes plans for implementing hosted transcription solutions in the context of Australia Higher education.

Part 7 and 8: Synchronized Annotations and Social Learning- Keith Bain, Saint Mary's University (standing in for Mike Wald, University of Southampton)
Mike Wald and his team from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom have developed the feature rich multimedia tool Synote. This application allows professors and scholars to upload transcribed lectures and presentations to the web. This information is synchronized and presented in a single web page that can be easily accessed on multiple browser platforms worldwide. Synote provides a rich learning environment for students by improving accessibility through bookmarks, known as Synmarks.

Part 9 and 10: Net4Voice - Innovative Learning Methods in the EU - Federica Gorni, Universita di Bologna
Net4Voice focuses on the experimentation of Speech Recognition (SR) technology in various learning settings including Higher, Adult and School Education in three different countries: Great Britain, Germany and Italy. The language of instruction in each country provides an opportunity to implement SR-based learning methodologies in the Anglo-Saxon, Continental, and Latin educational models. Federica Gorni from the Universita di Bologna discusses the impact of SR technologies on students and teachers, especially persons with disabilities and second language learners.

Part 11 and 12: "Wissenheim" project - SR in interactive 3D worlds- Peter Schulthess, Universität Ulm
The "Wissenheim" project is an interactive 3D world intended to provide a learning environment featuring interactive animations and social scenarios. Speech technologies can potentially enhance virtual world learning and accessibility through targeted captioning, transcription, indexing, and synchronization tasks. Peter Schulthess from Institut für Verteilte Systeme, Universität Ulm discusses ideas and opportunities for integrating SR technologies in interactive 3D worlds.
