NoteFinder Personal Search Engine

OVERVIEW

Note Finder is a note indexing and phrase table system used in conjunction with Liberated Learning's speech recognition generated Notes. This supplementary study tool has the unique ability to index uploaded course notes and allow students to search for specific words that are of key interest.

Liberated Learning multimedia notes may be in the form of text, audio and/or PowerPoint slides. This may differ depending upon professor preference. Notes containing videos or other large files may take longer to download. Course notes are usually uploaded within 24-48 hours of the actual lecture. Notes are only available for courses during the semester in which they are taught. Use the demonstration course to explore Note Finder features.

HOW TO USE NOTE FINDER - PLEASE READ

  • Searching for Terms (Search Query)
Searching for terms (key words) is achieved much like any other major search engine. Simply type the word into "Search Query" and submit it. All search queries are broken into their stemmed words. For example, typing "religion" is the same as typing "relig". Due to the fact that the search engine makes use of stemmed words, many words actually have the same meaning. For example, "battered", "batterer", "batterers", "battering", and "batteries" will yield the same search results.
  • Phrase Table
Key phrases from the "Phrase Table" allow similar word lookup by clicking the "Similarly Spelled" link. Please be aware that when searching for specific terms all similar words will be be included in the search results.
    • Multimedia button: Click on the Multimedia button to display a printable page that may deliver audio, text and PowerPoint slides. To select and print a slide, place the cursor in the slide on the right hand side of the screen, and right click Print.
    • Audio button: Click on the Audio button (arrow) to listen to lecture.
  • Course Files
The "Course Files" link contains all uploaded files from a course. PowerPoint only files may be found here as well by searching for the .ppt extension and the lecture date.
  • Viewing Files
Files are described by its name and the year, month and day on which it was created. The number following the day refers to the order in which each file was created. Double click on the file name to open the page. Right click and select "Print" to print the page.
    • Select "filename_2006_mth_day_text. html" - for text only (PowerPoint content if applicable)
    • Select "filename_2006_mth_day_frames. html" - includes text, audio and PowerPoint content (if applicable)

  • Printing of Notes
Liberated Learning notes may contain PowerPoint slides as well as text. Liberated Learning notes generate a print-out of both the text transcript and PowerPoint images.
  • Highlighting
To view the document with the key word(s) highlighted, click the word "Highlighted" in small print next to the file URL at the bottom of each search result.

Note: This feature works with standard HTML documents only. It is incompatible with Liberated Learning multimedia documents (text with audio/video).

Manually search for key words in a multimedia document by using the Internet Explorer menu through Edit > Find (Ctrl F) > type in word.
